Banana Foster French Toast

Last fall we went to Disneyland for Halloween time (if you haven’t been to Disneyland for Halloween you are missing out). We always do the character breakfast at the Plaza in on Mainstreet in Disneyland, this year they had something new or at least new to us. I always love getting their french toast its really good, but this time they had a Banana Foster Carmel syrup to put over it. It was to die for and I definitely had to go back for seconds. Since then I have been on the search for a recipe that could match this deliciousness, and I have finally found one that comes pretty dang close.

For my french toast I like to use either a Chunky Cinnamon Bread from Kneaders or a White Chocolate Artisan Bread from Harmon’s Grocery. The possible are endless with french toast so if you have not branched out away from your standard white bread or sourdough go to your local bakery and see what they have to mix it up.

One you have chosen your bread I like to cut mine into thicker slices if possible. Then I put together my egg mixture to dip the bread in, I use the following:

8 Large Eggs

1/4 Cup Milk

1 tablespoon of Vanilla

Cinnamon (this you will need to add after each piece is dipped or the bread soaks it up and you have no more)

Once you have dipped each side of the french toast in the mixture and its thoroughly covered, place each piece on a griddle heated to about 350 degrees. Let each piece heat til the egg  mixture is cooked and flip. Once you have cooked your toast top with this Banana Foster syrup while toast is still warm. The recipe is below, don’t worry its really simple.

Banana Foster Topping:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tsp. rum extract or 1 tbsp dark rum
  • 1 medium banana, peeled and sliced

How to:

In a medium sauce pan, cook butter and sugar together for 2-3 minutes. Then add the salt, heavy cream and whisk together.

Cook for another 1 minute while stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and add the rum and sliced bananas.

Poor topping over warm french toast of your liking.

Here is the original recipe they also included a recipe for a banana bread to go with, I modified this by using a bread that I prefer but the topping was excellent. Banana Foster Recipe
